Walden Pond Walden Pond was set up in 1997 to provide affordable and secure housing for people working for social change. The co-op is committed to social justice, environmental responsibility and community involvement. Walden Pond aims to provide its members with living, working and campaigning space, to nurture a creative spirit of collaboration and sharing, and to promote engagement with wider society. Up to 2001 the co-op rented houses in London and Brighton from private landlords, and was forced to move twice by landlords selling up to cash in on the house price boom. In January 2001 Walden Pond bought a large Victorian house in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, and we settled into a much more stable and productive lifestyle! In 2002 the co-op bought a nearby flat to house more members. In 2006 saw the completion of council -funded renovation work on our flat, and we decided to rent the 3 other flats in the same building to allow us to accomodate an increased membership and have control of the entire house and garden. The co-op currently has eleven members. Areas in which our members are active include anti-war campaigning, climate change activism, promoting cycling, alternative/appropriate technology, allotments, and home education.
